Does My Child Need Braces?

How do you know if you or your child need braces?

One of the questions parents of preteens frequently ask is, "Does my child need braces?". The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that you take your son or daughter in for an exam with an orthodontist around age seven to see if they will need orthodontic treatment.

If your child has not had an orthodontic consultation, there are other ways to know if they may need braces. First of all, if you notice that your child has a cross bite, underbite, or overbite with their permanent teeth that is a sign that your child may possibly need treatment. Many times your general dentist will let you know if they feel like your child needs braces and will refer you to a specialist. Last, a pediatrician may also refer you to an orthodontist for a consultation if they feel your child's teeth alignment or jaw is causing other health issues. When questions come up, it is best to see an orthodontic specialist to get a professional opinion.

Dr. Lauren Olson offers complimentary exams for new patients and unique treatment plans for each case. Call us today or fill out our online request an appointment form to get set up!
DIY braces

The Dangers of the DIY Braces Trend

Have you heard about the DIY braces trend?

DIY (or "do it yourself") braces have become increasingly popular with teenagers and young adults in the last year, and several "patients" have posted videos about their "treatment" on social media. These videos posted by kids or adults show them making their own form of braces with household items like rubber bands or superglue. The Kansas City Star and several other local stations have aired a stories about this disturbing trend.

Dr. Lauren Hood-Olson suggests that kids and adults stay away from treating themselves because there are many dangers of DIY braces. Your teeth and oral health play a vital role in the health of your overall body. If any sort of infection or problem occurs in your DIY treatment, it could go unnoticed until it was too late. Orthodontists like Dr. Lauren are specialists in not only the alignment of teeth, but also how they work with your jaw, neck and head. Orthodontic specialists have spent many years studying the art of a straight and healthy smile.

We can assure you that DIY braces will most likely not give you the results you desire and it is not a safe to straighten your teeth. The team at Olson Orthodontics understands that braces are not cheap, and we offer many payment options to work with your lifestyle. Dr. Olson also works with a program called Smiles Change Lives, which offers an option for discounted braces if your child qualifies.

We believe in "smiles for the whole family" and do all we are able to so that you can afford the cost of a beautiful, healthy smile. Contact us today by phone or email to set up a FREE consultation. We also offer a military discount and are conveniently located in O'Fallon, IL.
