Meet Sarah

Sarah is one of our new team members at Olson Orthodontics! We are glad to have her join us. Below is a little bit of information all about SARAH!

What led you to your current role?

I worked for 2 years at a general dentist office, before finally deciding it wasn't for me. I knew I wanted to stay in some type of healthcare profession so that I'd be able to help people. So, I figured hey! why not braces!? That's when I stepped into the orthodontic field about a year ago.

Where are you from? If not O’Fallon what brought you here?

I was born and raised in good Ol' Belle-Vegas!

Did you have braces? For how long? Did you have clear or colored rubber bands? Head gear? Did you really use the floss threaders like you’re supposed to?

Lucky for me, I not only got to enjoy the luxury of braces just once, but TWICE! I first had braces in high school for about 2 years. I used both clear and colored elastics depending on my mood, what I was doing, and where I was going. I absolutely hated floss threaders. After throwing away my retainers in the trash a few different times, I gave up on the idea. Fast forward to my second year of being in the dental field, I noticed how my teeth had shifted, and I became very picky and understanding about the importance of straight teeth, retainers, and oral health. That's when I decided on round two of braces!

What job could you never do?

Embalmer. Sewage Person. Surgeon.

If Olson Orthodontics didn’t exist and you needed a totally different career, what would be another dream job?

Doggy Daycare/Pet Sitter, stay at home mom-preneur

What’s the last book you read? Movie you watched?

The last movie I watched was Peter Rabbit during family movie night.

What was your first concert? Best concert?

My first concert ever was Aaron Carter & Dream Street. The best concert I've ever been to was Carrie Underwood. Hands down!!!!

What celebrity has the best teeth?

Carrie Underwood has a phenomenal smile and teeth!

About what are you most proud of Olson Orthodontics?

How family oriented the practice is, along with the most welcoming, vibrant, outgoing, and fun team.

Do you have any pets? What are their names?

I have 3 dogs(Ella-Great Dane, Dixie-Weimaraner, & Lola- German Short-haired Pointer) fish, and a rabbit(Eliza) with my Fiance. I also have 3 dogs(Riley, Madeline, & Pippy, ALL Bloodhounds) at my parents house. Surprisingly I've also had pet ducks, and ferrets as well!

If you want to surprise someone, what do you tell them about yourself?

I own a mud truck that I used to take out to mudding events to get a little dirty from time to time.

When you were little, what did you want to be when you grew up?

I wanted to be a WWF Diva! (Now its called WWE)

What do you think is the best advance for orthodontics in recent years?

Scanning!!!! I've never heard of a single person who absolutely loves getting impressions done.

Meet Bethany!

Bethany is one of our new team members at Olson Orthodontics! We are glad to have her join us. Below is a little bit of information all about BETHANY!

What led you to your current role?

After having been given the privilege to get to know Dr. Olson and her family, my Mom thought her office would be a great working environment. We asked if Dr. Olson was ever in need of some “behind the scenes” work. That led to me working at the office with sterilization and random jobs that need to be done.

Where are you from? If not O’Fallon what brought you here?

I was born in Guatemala and was adopted into my forever family when I was eight months old. I have lived in the O’Fallon area ever since.

Did you have braces? For how long? Did you have clear or colored rubber bands? Head gear? Did you really use the floss threaders like you’re supposed to?

I did have braces for a year and a half. Thankfully, I just had to have basic treatment. My favorite part about braces was picking out different colors and using the colorful rubber bands. I was very careful and flossed my teeth every day. Honestly :)

What job could you never do?

I could never be a math teacher. I hate math!

If Olson Orthodontics didn’t exist and you needed a totally different career, what would be another dream job?

I’m still in high school. I have one year until I’m finished, but I’m hoping to work in the dental field. If orthodontics didn’t exist, I would probably look into the nursing field or go to cosmetology school.

What’s the last book you read? Movie you watched?

The last book I read was King Henry 5th, the play written by Shakespeare. It was part of my school so I was forced to read it. The last movie I enjoyed at the theater was The Miracle Season. It was a fantastic movie.

What was your first concert? Best concert?

Winter Jam!

What celebrity has the best teeth?

Dylan Schneider

About what are you most proud of Olson Orthodontics?

The people that work here. They are all so kind and fun to be around. Also, we get patients in and out of the office very quickly because of our proficiency.

Do you have any pets? What are their names?

Our family has three pets. A dog named Asher and two cats named Lilly and Odyssey.

If you want to surprise someone, what do you tell them about yourself?

I was adopted, and I have three siblings that were also adopted.

Did you watch Downtown Abbey? If so, who is your favorite character?

No, I have never seen it before.

When you were little, what did you want to be when you grew up?

I’m only 17 but when I was younger I wanted to be a vet.

What do you think is the best advance for orthodontics in recent years?

I would have to go with Invisalign. It seems like many people are choosing Invisalign, instead of regular wire braces, including my grandma who has wanted braces for forever.

orthodontic benefits

Orthodontic Benefits

Orthodontics benefit not only your smile and confidence but also your oral health. If you’re wondering whether you should get orthodontic treatment, the proof is in the results. Below are just a few of the reasons why orthodontic treatment can change your life.

Why Braces?

Protruding or misaligned teeth can cause you to have a bad bite, which can result in a range of problems from difficulty chewing and speaking to headaches and TMJ. At Olson Orthodontics, we can determine the perfect position for your bite to improve your life on a daily basis. Imagine being able to speak and eat with ease and a life free from pain. We can make that life a reality!

Another common problem comes from crowding. Crowded teeth can be severe enough to affect your bite as well and make teeth hard to clean. Even minor teeth crowding can increase your risk of gingivitis and lead to gum disease if not treated early on. Orthodontic treatment can reduce crowding and make it easier to clean hard-to-reach plaque. This can give you a healthier, whiter smile for life.

Braces also have an aesthetic benefit because they improve the look of your smile. No matter what your age, a beautiful, straight smile can increase your self-confidence and truly change your life.

Don’t put your new smile on hold any longer. Request an appointment today!

orthodontic emergencies

Orthodontic Emergencies

Orthodontic emergencies can happen when you least expect them. If you experience an orthodontic emergency, whether it’s a broken appliance or constant pain, we can help!

If you bite into hard, chewy food and break your appliance or injure yourself after a hard fall or other jarring impact, contact our office immediately. A broken appliance can result in further injury to your mouth and a longer, more costly treatment. We can find a time to fit you into our schedule and fix your appliance.

If you have an emergency outside of our office hours, call us at (618) 624-0800 and listen to the instructions on our voicemail.

Preventing Orthodontic Emergencies

So, is there any way to prevent orthodontic emergencies from even happening? Thankfully, the answer is yes! Here are some tips to keep your appliances in great shape and your smile happy throughout treatment.

Stick to Soft Foods.

Chewy, sticky, crunchy, and hard food can break your braces. Try to only eat soft foods and take smaller bites. If your braces break while you’re eating, you will need to schedule an appointment with us to get them fixed. Note that you may incur additional orthodontic fees.

Protect Teeth with a Mouthguard.

Do you or your child play sports? If so, it’s crucial to protect the teeth and braces from injury using a mouthguard. At your next visit, let us know if you need a mouthguard. We can help you choose the right one for your smile.

Remember to Brush and Floss.

No matter what, always brush and floss every day. If you can, brush every time after you eat. If food gets stuck in your appliances and teeth, plaque can form. This can lead to gum disease later on.

teeth grinding

Teeth Grinding and Your Smile

Teeth grinding can be a real pain—pun intended! It’s a fairly common problem in patients of any age. In some instances, it can be caused by stress and may go away on its own when you’re no longer stressed. Other times, the cause is a bad bite. Regardless of why you grind your teeth, it can be difficult to fix by yourself.

Do You Grind Your Teeth?

One way to tell if you’re grinding your teeth is a sore jaw when you wake up. You may also experience a dull, constant headache from the pressure you put on your jaw. If you don’t receive treatment, your teeth may wear down over time, causing you to lose teeth.

A Mouthguard Can Help.

At Olson Orthodontics, we can provide a mouthguard that fits your individual smile to protect your teeth from the effects of teeth grinding while you sleep. If a bad bite is causing the grinding, Dr. Olson can examine your jaw as well as the teeth to determine the best course of action. In many cases, we can treat a bad bite with braces alone.

How Can You Reduce Teeth Grinding?

While a mouthguard and orthodontic treatment can fix the physical symptoms, reducing your stress levels may help reduce how often you grind your teeth. We recommend avoiding alcohol and caffeine when possible and practicing relaxation techniques, such as yoga or meditation. If you find yourself grinding your teeth throughout the day, try putting your tongue between your teeth. This will stop you from putting pressure on your jaw, and over time it can help you to train yourself to relax your jaw muscles.
