Invisalign® FAQ

Invisalign is a system of clear aligners that slowly move your teeth without the look of traditional braces. If you’re looking for an alternative to braces that’s just as effective, Invisalign may be a great option for you. We hope the following frequently asked questions will help you get some answers on this popular new treatment type.

How does it work?

First, we will take impressions of your teeth a scan of your teeth and send them it off to a lab to create multiple sets of aligners. Each set is custom-made to adjust your teeth little by little gradually each week. You’ll replace your upper and lower aligners on the same day every week until your teeth move to their final positions.

How long is my treatment time?

Most patients finish treatment in nine 9 to 15 18 months. However, it’s important to note that your exact treatment time will vary depending on the severity of your needs and the health of your teeth and gums. When you come to our office for an evaluation, we can give you a better idea of your treatment length.

When should I wear my aligners?

To have a successful treatment, you must wear your aligners for 20 to 22 hours every day. You need to remove your aligners to eat and drink anything other than cold-to-lukewarm water, as well as when you brush and floss your teeth. Be sure to put your aligners back in as soon as you’re done eating or cleaning your teeth to wear them for as close to the recommended hours as possible.

How am I supposed to clean my aligners?

Every morning and night, you should brush your aligners with a soft toothbrush and rinse them in lukewarm water. Be sure to keep your aligners away from hot water, as this can warp the material. If possible, we also recommend brushing after meals. It’s a good idea to keep a travel toothbrush and toothpaste on hand while you’re out of the house to brush more easily during the day. We have a product called Eversmile that is a great cleaner for your aligners, also.

Do I have to wear a retainer?

Yes. After treatment is complete, we will provide you with a retainer to wear to keep your teeth from moving back to their original positions. We strongly encourage patients to wear their retainer for as long as we prescribe. If teeth begin to move back, you risk increasing your treatment costs and extending your treatment length.

What is the cost of Invisalign?

The overall cost of Invisalign can range from patient to patient. Some dental health plans include orthodontic coverage, while others may not. During your initial consultation we can assess your smile and determine your exact treatment plan and insurance benefits to give you a cost estimate.
